Good bodybuilders often talk about back development in terms of two qualities: thickness and width. Thickness is the depth in the back – it’s like having slabs upon slabs of muscle stacked on top of each other in your back muscles – traps, rhomboids, teres, lats and spinal erectors… it’s like if you were helping a bro oil up backstage, your hand would disappear into the depths of that mass…  it’s like mounds of muscles that undulate like rolling hills across the countryside. And then you have width, which is more self-explanatory – those are your “wings” – the V-taper… the aspect of latissimus dorsi development that allows you to see your back when judges look at you.. from the front! Your back muscles literally flare out under your arm pits, and the wider they spread, the greater your V taper and the more impressive your physique.  If you don’t have both – width and thickness – your physique is not complete. Now we finally had a chance to meet in person… and I got to witness a workout like you cannot believe!

Gnarly, even. Unfortunately, not many bodybuilders have that “look” because there are two ubiquitous “forearm problems” that almost every bodybuilder experiences… Fortunately, there is a secret remedy for both. It’s not new, it has simply been forgotten, except by those who are students of old time strongman methods…

WNBF natural pro bodybuilder John Bartlett was in town this weekend, so we hit a leg session at Strong and Shapely Gym. There’s certainly no shortage of “toys” to play with on leg day at Strong & Shapely, but when I asked John if he had ever used the QUAD BLASTER before and he said no, I knew I had to break that puppy out again, throw it in my car and haul it out to strong & Shapely…

I use a lot of variety and “muscle confusion” in my training, but even so, there is a thread of consistency that runs through most of my workouts. In other words, in every workout, something changes while something stays the same and builds on the previous workout. However, every so often, I completely change my “typical” style of training for something totally different or even off the wall, just for the “shock” value. Such was the case today when we did a session consisting of 100% supersets, which was also very hamstring and posterior chain focused…
