Thursday, August 4th, 2005. I wanted to do something completely different for chest and biceps today, so I jumped in my car and drove over to Strong and Shapely Gym. That’s
the place I train when I want Variety with a capital “V”. S & S has something like 40 back machines, 40 leg machines, and probably at least 20-25 chest machines, which came in handy today.
Wednesday, August 3rd. Back day. Another Richie (“Master Of Pain”) Session. After he kicked my butt last week, I was ready for this one… mentally and physically. It was a doozy, once again, but I felt really good today and kept up with everything he dished out…
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005. Got off to a slow start today (got into a fight with the snooze button), but the day turned into a good one. Excellent workout for delts and triceps… even hit cardio twice today – once at the (almost) crack of dawn for 45 min, then another 30 at night. (Yes, I worked out THREE times today)!
Sunday, July 31st. After struggling on and off with low back problems literally all year long, (which has held back my leg and upper back training somewhat), I finally feel like I’m “BACK IN BUSINESSS.” Today was the first day in long time that I’m within striking range of my old training poundages in squats (front squats) and stiff legged deadlifts. At this point, I don’t need to go too much heavier, as it’s more about muscle quality, detail and refinement now, but it definitely feels good and I know the heavier basics will reflect in my leg development… it always does.
Saturday, July 30th, 2005. Chest, biceps and abs today with Kostas Mar. For chest today, it was business as usual, using no less than a half a dozen different intensity techniques to make light or moderate weights feel heavier. For biceps, it was onward and upward to some new stuff… some straightforward heavy barbell curls, and this kick-ass new superset combo… you gotta check out this one!
Thursday, July 28th. Back day with Richie. I’ve been a competitive bodybuilder for 16 years and I swear the pulldown supersets Richie had me do today had to be the most painful workout I have ever experienced in my life (muscle burn). I should have a back like Ronnie Coleman after this! (DAMMIT, why don’t I have a Ronnie back yet????)
Wednesday, July 27th, 2005. Shoulders and Triceps with Richie again. Richie is a busy guy these days, with something like 50 or so PT client sessions on a typical week, but
I try to schedule my training so I work shoulders/triceps days and back days with Richie. I do legs on my own, because my legs are a strong point. No worries there. I also usually do chest and biceps on my own. I can always improve everywhere, but the one thing that will improve my physique the most, in my opinion, is to increase my width -wider shoulders, wider back – so working with a trainer on deltoids and back is a matter of prioritization. It’s working… but man, he kicks my ass every time… especially today!
Tuesday, July 26th. Leg day once again! I trained solo today, so I whipped through this workout very quickly, which was difficult to do. It’s pretty easy to cut down your rest intervals on small body parts because they don’t tax the cardio vascular system, but on leg day, you’re not only fighting local muscular fatigue, but also cardio vascular fatigue. Regardless, I went a bit lighter than usual, pushed the pace, and worked on high tension and a big pump.
Sunday, July 24th, 2005. It’s still a little bit frustrating (ok, a LOT frustrating), not to be able to push the really heavy weights on chest day anymore. I’m feeling stronger and more confident and there’s no pec/delt tie-in discomfort, but I’m not willing to “test myself” or try to find my limits. Having minor injuries to work around is pain in the ass enough; it’s totally not worth risking a serious injury. So as I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, I’ve altered my chest training strategy this year and there will probably be some permanent changes as well. I continued with my new pec strategies again today…
